Which kayak trailer should I choose? To answer this question, you must first start with the kayak model you have or intend to acquire. What characterizes most kayak trailers is that they are designed for traditional kayaks of outdoor model, they therefore usually work best with kayaks with v-shaped hulls. This means that you may often need to adapt traditional kayak trailers to work well with a fishing kayak. There are mainly 5 types of kayak trailers on the market today, these are: Built-in transport wheels are available on some models from several manufacturers. You do not need to buy an extra cart to get to the water = cheap. This "trolley type" works best when the fishing kayak is unloaded, many choose to supplement with another type of trolley for longer transportation. Traditional kayak trolley on which the kayak is placed and held in place by straps. There is a wide range of these trailers, which means that they are relatively cheap to buy. However, consider whether the trolley fits your particular kayak, in many cases you may need to adapt the trolley for the kayak to lie well (still) on the trolley. With this trailer model, you can often transport the kayak to and from the water with your equipment in the kayak (fishing rod, echo sounder, kayak crate, etc.), but keep in mind the manufacturer's weight restrictions for each trailer to avoid unnecessary damage. Fixed trailer where the wheels fold up/down during transportation. This kayak trailer model was developed in the USA with fishing kayaks in mind, first out was Boonedox Landing Gear and other manufacturers have since followed. A big advantage of these wheels is that you can usually keep much / all your equipment in the kayak and thus save time from the car to the water. The wheels are attached to the kayak behind the seat and are easily folded up/down with the equipment still in the kayak. However, care should be taken not to exceed the weight limitations of these models. For transportation, these work best on a relatively smooth surface without major potholes and roots, but if you use common sense and consider the weight, it is an excellent choice for most kayak anglers. However, the cost of these is relatively high. TROLLER cargo and transport trailer is another type of kayak trailer that was also invented in Sweden. This trolley model is ideal for traditional sea kayaks that are relatively narrow and have a V-shaped hull. The beauty of this model is that in addition to being a kayak trailer, it can also be used as a cargo trailer. The trailer is simply placed on the end of the car roof and then helps you roll your sea kayak onto the car roof. Super easy and very simple to use. Scupper Hole trolleys This is the last of the trolley models, this model consists of wheels and 2 tubes that protrude through the kayak's drainage hole (scupper hole) and are thus held in place without straps. These models are usually model-specific, but there are also models where it is possible to adjust the width between the tubes to fit different kayak models. The assembly of these trolleys often means that you need to empty loose objects out of the kayak when it is to be assembled, as the kayak must be tipped / lifted to mount the wheels. There are also those who have developed a way to assemble the trolley without unloading the kayak, but it requires you to be relatively tall and strong. Our assessment is therefore that the trolley type works best if you do not fish yourself and can thus be helped to lift and put in the trolley from the bottom of the kayak.
